The baby, Alfie Oliver, was born with a life threatening cardiovascular condition. The Leeds General Infirmary and the world renowned Great Ormond Street Hospital decided to gamble on prescribing erectile dysfunction treatment Viagra as a way of regulating his condition.
The aim was to open the narrow blood vessels around Alfie’s lungs and stem further deterioration. It is sadly expected that patients with this condition will not live longer than 8-9 years, but administering liquid Viagra to Alfie six times daily has given his parents hope and time with their beloved son.
Alfie’s parents, Rob and Tracey Oliver, would like to set up a charity to fund further research into finding a cure for this condition – until then their hopes rest on the unlikely saviour Viagra.
